How to Take a Selfie That Works With AI Virtual Try-On

4 min read

Most of the quality of a virtual try-on is decided before the AI does any work. The selfie you upload sets the lighting, the proportions, and the visible edges the model has to read. A few small adjustments take a try-on from passable to genuinely useful.

Start with even, natural light

A clear front-facing photo in soft daylight gives the model the best read on color, shadow, and depth. Stand a few steps inside a room with a window to your side or in front of you — never directly behind you, since a bright window will turn your body into a silhouette the AI has to guess at.

Avoid mixed lighting (a warm bedroom lamp plus cool window light) and overhead spots that cast hard shadows on your face. TryBit pre-processes selfies to clean the background, but the cleaner the source photo, the closer the try-on will be to what you actually look like.

Stand naturally, with your arms at your sides

Try-on models can handle a slight angle, but a relaxed front-facing pose with your arms visible gives the AI the most information about your shape and proportions. Crossing your arms or holding the phone out of frame hides edges the model needs.

Avoid heavily layered outfits in your selfie — a thick coat or oversized hoodie hides your silhouette and makes the try-on guess. Prefer fitted everyday clothing like a t-shirt and jeans, or a simple slip dress, so the AI has a clean read on shoulders, waist, and hips.

Frame your whole body, with a little headroom

Including head, torso, hips, and feet helps the model preview full outfits — including dresses, full-length pants, and shoes — accurately. If the photo is cropped at the knees, the AI has to extrapolate everything below it.

Hold the camera at chest height for the most flattering proportions. A floor-to-ceiling mirror selfie or a quick photo from a friend both work well. TryBit's onboarding asks for a single full-body selfie that's reused across try-ons, so it's worth taking thirty seconds to do this once and do it right.
